Generative AI
There are no formalized guidelines for citing generative AI, like ChatGPT. See recommendations and examples on the MLA Style blog. Note that it is important to be transparent in your use of generative AI; if your use of a generative AI tool does not require a citation, you may wish to describe how you used the tool (e.g. to find sources, etc.) within your paper.
Suggested Citation Format:
"Prompt text" prompt. Generative AI Tool. Version/date of tool. Publisher/Parent Company, Date of Use, URL.
Sample Works Cited Entry:
“How could libraries use generative-AI tools” prompt. ChatGPT, version 3.5, OpenAI, 1 May 2024, chat.openai.com/chat.
