Course Reserves Service: Print Reserves

The library makes required and recommended readings and other materials for courses available for free! We aim to make as much content as possible available to students online through our scanning and copyright clearance services.

Print or Physical Reserves

Our print reserves service is still available. Generally we try to make items available online whenever possible, but there may be times when placing physical copies of items on reserve is necessary or more appropriate.

Print reserves are generally library owned items for the short-term use of students. These items are held on the reserve shelves behind the public services desk.

Items we can place on Print Reserve

  • Books owned by the Library when
    • the amount required exceeds Fair Dealing (e.g. multiple chapters or more than 10% of a book) and copyright clearance cannot be obtained
    • no eBook version can be purchased or licensed
  • DVDs when no streaming version can be purchased or licensed

Items we cannot place on Print Reserve

  • Material for online courses. We can work with you and CITL to either make the material available digitally or find alternatives.
  • Instructor's editions or complimentary copies of textbooks with the phrase "For Review Only" or language containing similar copyright restrictions is present.

Loan Periods for Print or Physical Reserves

Instructors have many options when it comes to setting loan periods for required and recommended readings or other materials on Reserve. Instructors can choose from the following loan periods:

  • 2-hours
  • 4 hours
  • 1 day
  • 2 days
  • 3 days
  • 1 week
  • 2 weeks

Items can also be set to "in-library use only."
