A guide to citing sources using APA Style, 7th edition

Generative AI

There are no formal guidelines yet for citing ChatGPT and generative AI. See recommendations on the APA Style blog. You may wish to provide greater context for the use of the generative AI tool in the body of your paper. The APA Style blog suggests that "You may also put the full text of long responses from ChatGPT in an appendix of your paper or in online supplemental materials, so readers have access to the exact text that was generated."

Note that the goal is to be transparent in your use of generative AI; if your use of a generative AI tool does not require a citation, you may wish to describe how you used the tool (e.g. to find sources, etc.) within your paper.

Note that the author of the algorithm that drives the tool (the parent company) is considered to be the author in the citation.

Suggested Citation Format:

Author/Parent company. (Year). Generative-AI tool (version) [description of tool]. URL

Sample Works Cited Entry:

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat
