A guide to citing sources using APA Style, 7th edition

General format

Note that your instructor may request additional formatting beyond the APA Style guidelines. Check with your instructor and review assignment details before formatting.

Overall formatting

APA Style papers should be formatted with 1" margins on all sides, in a clear, readable font (12 pt Times New Roman is recommended).

Include a page header/running head at the top of every page. Flush left should be the "TITLE OF YOUR PAPER", and flush right should be the page numbers. See a sample APA Style Paper from the Online Writing Lab at Purdue University.

Sections

Title page

  • Include "Running head: TITLE OF YOUR PAPER          1" at the top of the page.
  • Write the title of the paper centred on the upper half of the page.
  • Beneath the title, add the author's name. (First name, Initial, Last name, without titles or degrees)
  • Beneath the author's name, add institutional affiliation.

Abstract

  • Appears on a new page. Write a summary of the research paper in a single paragraph, double spaced, approximately 150-250 words.

Main body

  • Double space the paper, and make use of in-text citations appropriately.

References

  • Begin on a new page. Format according to APA Style citation guidance.
