Generative AI

There are no formal guidelines yet for citing ChatGPT and generative AI tools. The Chicago Manual of Style's FAQ offers suggestions and guidance.

Generated material must be acknowledged. This can be done in the text, or using a parenthetical text reference. Do not include a reference in your bibliography, unless you have a publicly accessible link to the generated material.

Note that it is important to be transparent in your use of generative AI; if your use of a generative AI tool does not require a citation, you may wish to describe how you used the tool (e.g. to find sources, etc.) within your paper.
