Chicago citation style

A guide to citing sources using the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition

Generative AI

There are no formal guidelines yet for citing ChatGPT and generative AI tools. The Chicago Manual of Style's FAQ offers suggestions and guidance.

Generated material must be acknowledged. This can be done in the text, or using notes. Do not include a reference in your bibliography, unless you have a publicly accessible link to the generated material.

Note that it is important to be transparent in your use of generative AI; if your use of a generative AI tool does not require a citation, you may wish to describe how you used the tool (e.g. to find sources, etc.) within your paper.

Suggested note format (for a direct quote, with the prompt mentioned in the body of the paper):

1. Text generated by Generative AI Tool Name, Parent Company, Date of access, URL.

Sample note:

1. Text generated by ChatGPT, OpenAI, May 1, 2024, https://chat.openai.com/chat.

Suggested note format (prompt is not included in the body of the paper):

1. Generative AI Tool, response to “Prompt,” Parent Company, Date of access.

Sample note:
