General rules

The Chicago Manual of Style Author-Date system is often used by scholars in the social sciences and sciences.

Citing sources in this style consists of two parts:

  1. An in-text citation
  2. A reference list

The in-text citation points the reader to the full information about the source found in the reference list.

Author-Date style follows similar principles as Notes-Bibliography style, and most citation examples from Notes-Bibliography style can be easily adapted to the Author-Date style by arranging citation elements in a slightly different order. For this reason, this guide will reference Notes-Bibliography style principles as they apply to Author-Date citation. Students may also find it helpful to consult rules and examples from Chicago Notes-Bibliography style and adapt them for the Author-Date system.
